EJ Fuissinstuff Rocks Out

Elijah was pretty grumpy when he woke up this afternoon so mommy put on the music, put him in the carrier, and we danced the grump away. Third Day Rocks!! Click on the album for the video.

Cool Dude #2

Elijah and Covey took a walk this morning over to Elijah's Great-grandparents house. It was hot but not too bad--we made it back home at 11am. G-Grandma got to hold Elijah while he napped for about 45 minutes.

Sleep Like an Egyptian

Sorry to all the Elijah fans (aka. Cool Uncle Cody and Grandparents and Great-Grandparents)--Elijah isn't much of a sleeper and has only been napping for about 30-45 minutes at a time. With trying to get a shower everyday and trying to keep the house in some kind of order, the Blog hasn't been a high priority.

For all of your curious people out there: Elijah is eating every two hours and it takes him a half an hour to finish eating. He is pretty much doing this around the clock with usually one exception a day (either a long nap or one longer stint at night of about 2.5 hours). We have no clue how much he weighs but is it somewhere near 8 lbs on the bathroom scale (Mama's weight+Elijah-Mama's weight=8lbs)

Here is a picture of Elijah sleeping in the dining room while we have dinner. We really like his arms.

Here are the pictures of Elijah we are taking every Sunday--Watch him grow!

Other updates:
  • This past week Elijah outgrew his newborn onesies and had to move on up to the 0-3 months.
  • We had to let out the straps on the carseat because he has grown so much.
  • Elijah cooed for the first time this week
  • Elijah smiled back at his mommy twice this week
  • Elijah successfully drank from a bottle for the first (and second) time this week
  • Covey was officially unemployed as of Wednesday this past week--Her wonderful boss actually came to the house to do the exit interview because Elijah had a stuffy nose and I didn't want to take him out. I sure am going to miss working at the WRRC.

Yesterday Elijah was pretty miserable. A reaction to someone's perfume left him with a stuffy nose and a grumpy attitude. His mama finally got him to go to sleep in the afternoon by carrying him around in her Maya Wrap Sling. Here is a picture of him sacked out.
Today he is much better. He had a good night last night and took a 2 hour nap this afternoon. He is feeling more like his cheerful baby self again.

Happy Baby!

Elijah had his first Dr. Appointment on Friday. He was up to 7lbs 8oz (I made them take off the diaper after they got a weight of 7lbs 14 oz--I wanted a REAL measurement and cloth diapers, when wet, are heavy). Considering at 3 days old he was down to 6lbs, this is a HUGE gain. Today we have an appointment with the midwife so we will see if he has chunked up any more.He is a generally happy baby--now that we figured out that caffeine is an EVIL substance! After 5 days of crying we figured out that the only common denominator was sweet tea in Covey's diet. We cut that out and have a happy baby once again.

Is it just us or are people, in general, really annoying with the baby questions? I swear if I hear-
"How is he sleeping?" one more time I will scream!! As if the HUGE bags under my eyes don't tell the story?? He is just a small fellow, he's two weeks old, and he eats every 2-2.5 hours. Yes we are tired!! Why can't you ask me something positive like how much he weighs or how we are liking parenthood?? I don't like talking about the one thing that my baby doesn't yet have the hang of :)

At any rate, parenthood is great and we are enjoying almost every minute of it. Today Covey officially submitted her letter of resignation. Her exit interview is Wednesday and that will be it. She will officially be a stay at home mom!

I'm Published--Well . . . Kinda

Our Homebirth story is up on www.NCHomebirth.com, you can check out the story here.

Elijah Update: Our little man is a crib monkey :)
Starting two nights ago we began laying Elijah down, awake but very groggy, in his crib to sleep at night. This was just an experiment because one night he fell asleep in there alone while mommy was rinsing a dirty diaper and seemed to sleep a lot better. Well, two nights down and the co-sleeper is now in the dining room (so he has a place to be while we are eating). Now, the co-sleeper was a wonderful thing, especially that first week with the new mom jitters, but the crib and baby monitor are wonderful too. I wasn't planning on moving him so soon but a couple of things made the move easier:
1) We can't nurse laying down because Elijah sucks in too much air and it hurts mommy's shoulder
2) We are trying not to wake daddy during the night since daddy has to work everyday. Elijah burps like Homer Simpson (LOUD and LONG) so we have to burp in the other room anyway.
3) Daddy Snores and it wakes up Elijah
4) Elijah is less sweaty and sleeps longer 2.5-3 hours in the crib vs. 1.5-2 hours in the co-sleeper

Here is a shot from two days ago of Elijah in his crib: (He hates having his feet covered!)

Rub-a-Dub Elijah in the Tub

It was a big day for Elijah today. Elijah finally lost his cord stump at his 1am diaper change. He put himself to sleep in his crib when his mama was washing out his dirty diaper at the 3am change and slept in his crib until this morning (up until now he has been in his co-sleeper). Covey didn't sleep well (she kept going in to make sure he was breathing) but Elijah was actually more comfortable in there because the mattress is better. He and his mama also went shopping for groceries for the first time at the Wal-Mart. It was their first solo outing and it went really well!

With the cord stump gone, Elijah's mama could hardly wait to give him a bath. This is one hot natured boy and he had a major case of baby-odor that a washcloth couldn't touch!
Tonight, after dinner, Elijah got his first bath. At first he wasn't sure he liked it, but he calmed down and seemed to enjoy it. Here are some shots of Elijah's first bath.

Here is an unrelated shot--Elijah, picking a Cantaloupe from the Garden with his daddy today after dinner (Elijah is in the maya sling that Sonya gave us)

Elijah is a Church Going Man

Elijah had his first big outing yesterday--twice!

He went to Sunday School and Morning Worship with his mom and dad and then later went to a Women's fellowship with his mom while his dad practiced with the praise band.
Elijah did great--he slept through Sunday School and the Worship with a morning snack in-between. He was a champ!

He slept almost through the evening service but didn't quite make it through the evening service.
He is growing like a weed--we had the midwife appointment on Saturday and he was 6lbs 6oz--up from 6lbs at 24 hours.

Mamma's Cool Dude

Today, although slightly overcast, Elijah wore his new Thomas the Tank Engine Sunglasses. They are a bit big but it helped him to stop squinting in the outside light. We are trying to get a daily dose of sunshine to keep him pink!

We had a fantastic night last night. Elijah went to bed at midnight after a VERY fussy day. He slept solid until 3am and then ate, then slept again until 6am and ate, then let his mama and daddy sleep in until 9am. It is absolutely amazing what a good nights rest can do. Both Elijah and his mama feel wonderful today.

Elijah seems to be over the sleepiness of birth. He is now nursing and staying awake for about 45 minutes to an hour to play with us before he falls asleep. One of the biggest helps is that Justin figured out what it sounds like when Elijah is crying because he has to burp. Now we can just burp him and he goes back to being a happy baby. It is so wonderful to see him smile and wriggle all around and not be crying. We are hoping this is a new trend!

Last night Elijah took his first car trip--three blocks to Grandma and Grandpa's house for Friday night dinner. It was a success and Elijah slept through his parent's clumsy attempts to buckle him in the car seat. We hope to take a slightly longer 3 mile trek to church tomorrow to show off our little man.

What Routine?

Whew!! Life with a baby is taking some getting used to. Elijah is doing great and starting to put a little meat on his bones. He is plumping out already. Unfortunately--the plumping means he is eating every hour or hour and a half--he is one hungry boy! Justin tore himself away this Thursday and Friday to work half days at the office. It is sort of easing him back in for next week when he has to go back full time. It is hard for him I am sure. Elijah and I just kinda hang out at home and I try and nap when I can since he is getting me up so much during the night. Here is a link to a great video of our little man after eating--his faces crack me up!

Of course we wouldn't disappoint our baby fans by omitting some new pictures. I think it is a law somewhere that new parents must take at least 10 pictures a day of their new munchkin. Here is a great one of Elijah sleeping on his daddy's chest.

Elijah Update

Elijah is doing great!

He had his 3-day-old checkup from the midwife today. He has maintained his weight since Monday and is looking great. We are hoping his cord stump will fall off tomorrow--it is hanging on by a thread!
Elijah is acting so much more alert now. He will actually wake up and interact about 15 minutes before wanting to eat and take a 10 minute break in the middle of nursing to just soak everything in. He is so bright-eyed! We are really enjoying this time to bond with him.

Elijah got his first bath yesterday to wash all of the blood off his hair and afterwards got calmed down by laying on his daddy's chest.

Introducing Elijah James Denton!!

Our Precious Baby Boy Has Arrived!!!
Elijah James Denton arrived at 3:26pm on August 6, 2006.
He weighed in at 6lb 4oz and was 19.5 inches long.
His mama had a 12.5 hour labor and was able to give birth at home.

Here is a shot of the Happy family!
Elijah was greeted by his Nana Sherry and Papa Snookie, his Granny Linda and Grampy Mac and his Cool Uncle Cody and Aunt Krysti who were all camped out downstairs, anxiously awaiting his arrival.

Here is a picture of Justin on Elijah's birthday--he was able to spend time showing off the baby while Covey got stiched and cleaned up.

39 Weeks and Hot Hot Hot!!!

Well, like most of the country, Eastern NC is experiencing hotter than normal temperatures. Being 39 weeks pregnant when the mercury outside is approaching 100 is kinda miserable. Despite Air Conditioning (for which I am VERY grateful--it gives me more appreciation for all of the generations of women that were pregnant before AC was invented--Bless their hearts!) Covey is acting like a big old fat blob today. She plans to inflate the kiddie pool and soak this afternoon in the delightfully cold hose temperature water to cool her and Cletus down. It should be a nice break from the 84 degree water at the YMCA pool (not to mention less crowded).

So far Cletus seems pretty content to keep on growing in his mama's belly. He is getting more cramped than we ever thought possible. Covey actually has bruises from where he has kicked her so hard from the inside. We keep telling him that there is more room outside but apparantly his grasp of English is tenuous at most--he doesn't seem to be getting the message :) Thankfully, other than Braxton Hicks (which come at least every 30 min or so) Covey isn't contracting. This means good nights sleep and great naps with only her bladder to interrupt. The nausea is also almost completely gone. Every now and again Cletus will kick Covey's stomach and make her feel very sick very fast, but for the most part, apart from certain really disgusting foods, Covey has been doing alright.

With only 7 days left until his due date, we are hoping to meet Cletus very soon!
