Happy Anniversary to Us!!

Our anniversary isn't until May 31st, but in order to celebrate 4 happy years we spent last night in a Bed and Breakfast. It was wonderful!!!! It was my first night away from my little boy which was hard, but I managed to think and talk about stuff other than Elijah. It was so nice to go away and reclaim ourselves as a couple and not as a mommy and daddy for a night. We went to Greenville and stayed at the 5th Street Inn. It was beautiful! We got there and found out that, not only were we the only guests, but that we had been upgraded from the "Professor" room to the "Chancellors Suite" free of charge! The room was outstanding! It had a queen bed, private bath and a sitting area. The rest of the house was beautiful too. We went out to dinner then came back and just enjoyed the screened in side porch and complimentary sodas before heading to bed. This bed and breakfast was especially nice because it was run by two men so it was all pink and lace and ruffles--it was actually very tastefully decorated. We have already decided that we would like to stay there again next year (probably 2 nights!) for Anniversary #5.

A HUGE thank you to Covey's parents who came and stayed with Elijah overnight and treated us to this romantic getaway.

Well after a couple of bites of tonight's dinner, Elijah decided he wanted the spoon. I got him one of his all rubber spoons (he will gag himself with the other ones) thinking he just wanted to play with it like normal. Instead he pointed to the jar and then signed "eat." I held out the jar and he dipped his spoon in and then put it in his mouth. After about three times I ran to get the camera. I got this video here (at this point the jar was almost empty so you see he doesn't get a lot on the spoon). On the video he is eating some kind of breakfast apple thing with egg. In the picture above he has just finished feeding himself prunes. Despite how messy it looks, he probably got about 90% of both jars in his mouth.

After he got tired of feeding himself he decided to fingerpaint a little bit. Click here for that video.

Chillin' with Daddy

Here's a shot from this weekend with EJ chillin' with his daddy.

EJ has gotten his 4th tooth! There are 3 on the bottom (middle two plus one next to that) and now one of his eye teeth. It is a little hard to see in the picture but it is on the left side on the top. He is going to be called "Bucky" (click here to see the original Bucky) until he gets more teeth. It looks like the second eye tooth will be next in which case we will call him "Little Vamp" (I Vant to suck your nips!!). It doesn't appear that the top front teeth are anywhere close to coming in. My little guy doesn't seem to do anything by the books!

My First Haircut!

Well the hair was getting long and curly and the "How old is your little girl?" questions were increasing in frequency so we decided to lop off the curls and make our little man more manly. Here are some pictures of Elijah's first haircut. (We gave him a biter biscuit to keep his hands busy and his fusser shut during the haircut.)

And here is a picture completely unrelated but oh so cute--Elijah pulling my shirt to get at the "goods" inside. He wanted to nurse something awful!
Finally--click here for a cute video of Elijah saying "Deedle Deoodle"

Mmmmm.. Ice Cream

We decided to put the strawberries from our garden to good use and make some homemade Strawberry Ice Cream! Elijah loved to watch the ice cream go around in the electric maker (no rock salt for us!) and he loved the taste of the ice cream too.

It was a good dessert to make--I am sure the cold felt good on his lip. Last night while playing at church EJ fell and split his lip open on those little teeth of his. The nursery worker was so afraid that we would freak out (we didn't) but he was fine and playing when Justin went to go and pick him up. Amazing what a little ice, a paper towel and some goldfish can fix :)

Happy Mother's Day!!

Happy Mother's Day!
It was a busy day for us. Elijah got dedicated today at church. We came home and had a snack and then spent the afternoon (until 6:30) at Justin's grandma's house with his mom and grandma (and the rest of the family!). It was pretty fun and I didn't have to cook or do too much with Elijah since his nana and papa were there to entertain him.
Here are some pics from the day:

Elijah getting dedicated. He fell asleep on the pew waiting for our turn and then slept in my arms the entire service. I don't get this kid! He will wake up if a truck drives by on the street or the phone rings but he can sleep through a service . Music going on, preaching going on and people clapping didn't disturb him at all! Here is a picture of me and my yard sale rocking chair. I went yard sailing yesterday and picked this up for $20!! I was so psyched! I have been wanting a glider since EJ was about 2 weeks old. This one is in less than perfect shape but it has a smooth rock and doesn't squeak. It is exactly what I wanted. This pic is in here so you can see how cute EJ was in his bowtie for the dedication.

Elijah and Daddy (with mommy) went to Lowes and got a plant and a trellis. This is a Clematis plant--a beautiful perennial flowering plant. EJ and Daddy planted it yesterday for me. It is my Mother's day gift. (Cut flowers make me sad because they die--plants rock--especially if they are hard to kill).

Happy Mother's Day Nana!

Naked Nap--Part Two

Could it get any cuter??!!

A huge praise--today, for the first time since the international day of the midwife--Elijah nursed while awake. He has only had one bottle today and only bitten once today! Praise God! My little boy is nursing again! I am so happy and thrilled that he has come back to it. Thanks to all of you who gave advice. I guess it was just a "nursing strike." I am glad it is over and hope it doesn't happen again!

We Be Jammin'

Elijah and I went over to my best friends house today. We made strawberry jam. It was a lot of fun. Here are some pictures of the day's activities.

Here is Jenn --cooking the jam.
Here is Elijah "helping" us by eating some strawberries. He was making sure they weren't poison.

Here I am with the jars of jam.
Here are Elijah and Justice playing in the kitchen while we made the jam. Justice slept almost the whole time. Elijah slept for 30 minutes.

How sad!

I think that Elijah has decided to wean himself. I am really mourning the loss of that special bond. I am feeling pretty rejected right now. I am also feeling a lot like a caregiver and not much like a mommy. I didn't realize how much of my mommy identity was bound up in breastfeeding.

About 3 days ago he started biting me every time I presented the breast. He would suck once or twice and them chomp down. Not love nibbles either--bloody chomp bites. So I started pumping and giving him milk in a bottle so that he didn't starve or get dehydrated and so I didn't explode.

Yesterday he refused my milk from a bottle and I had to give him formula. He took the milk from his daddy and today Nana is coming over to give him a bottle of my milk. I am trying to avoid formula as much as possible for now. I can already tell though that my milk is going waaaaay down (I only have a hand pump so I know it isn't emptying the breast).

Hopefully I will be well enough to try nursing again in about a week. If he still bites me I guess it will be all over with. He is such a stubborn little monkey.

On a good note--we only got up 3 times last night. That is a huge improvement from the 7-8 times a night we have been experiencing for the past 2 weeks.

Happy 3/4 Birthday--EJ is 9 months!

Elijah has learned to climb stairs. He started a week ago at church and climbed up on stage. Now he is busy tackling the 14 stairs in our house. He has made it up all of them 4 times now. Boy--what a workout!

Covey and Justin's Accents

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

The West

The South

The Inland North

North Central

The Northeast

I took the quiz here and it turns out I don't have an accent. It is short (15 questions or so) and fun! Thanks to Matt Buehrle for linking to this quiz.

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

Nipple Biter--Help!!

Ok--I am in desperate need of help and advice. I am hoping Naomi can ask her work-friends (Burhrle--get her to ask please!!) and any of you nursing mama's and LLL leaders can give your advice.

Elijah is a biter. Yesterday he bit me while nursing and I swear, I thought my nipple was gone! It was a bloody mess. This is the third time he has bit me hard enough to make me bleed. I am becoming paranoid and very tense while nursing. I am in constant fear he is going to chomp down on me again.

He is biting me about once a week hard enough to make me bleed. He will chomp hard enough to make tears come to my eyes almost every day. He is probably 3/4 done with the nursing when he chomps. Probably about 2 or 3 minutes after letdown. He doesn't chomp when he is tired (i.e. when I am nursing him first thing in the morning or down before a nap or down before bed). He chomps at morning snack and afternoon snack. He is asking to nurse either by crying his hungry cry, grabbing at my shirt or signing milk.

I have tried:
1) Getting him off with my finger, telling him "no" firmly, and ending the nursing session.
2) Pushing his face into my boob until he has to let go to breathe and ending the nursing session.
3) Spanking his leg and telling him "no" and ending the nursing session. (I did this yesterday out of sheer desperation)
4) Pinching his cheeks together pretty hard to get him to let go, telling him "no" and ending the nursing session

His response is always to cry and try and get back on to keep nursing.

I need help! I don't want to wean him but I am desperate! I can't stand living in fear that he is going to bite again. To top it off, he has only bottom teeth right now but he is cutting his 4th bottom tooth and two top teeth. I am afraid he could actually bite my nipple off once he has teeth on the top and on the bottom.

International Day of the Midwife

Elijah and I traveled to Raleigh to support our midwife today. It was hot and sunny but it was a good time. Here are some pictures from the day. We are members of NCFOM (North Carolina Friends of Midwifes) and hope that we can get a bill passed through the state legistlature making CPMs (professional-midwives) legal in NC. Currently, CNM (nurse-midwives) are the only ones legally able to attend homebirths. We are hoping to change that! (And yes--that does mean that we broke the law by having Elijah at home with a CPM).

Here is one of Elijah, all tuckered out after 3 hours in the sun playing.

Here is one of me and my midwife and our babies.

Naked Nap

Well--I took the plunge and let Elijah nap naked after 5 dry naps in a row. He LOVED it and actually slept a little over an hour (which is something for an afternoon nap!) The diaper didn't stay there--I just didn't want a picture of his "little man" on the blog. He stayed dry, nursed then sat on the potty seat and let it flow! I am not trying to potty train him but hey, the fewer diapers to change, the better!
